A guide to the purchase of a pond or waterfall for

Calgary is a beautiful city in the summer. The addition of a pond or a waterfall to you backyard can add immensely to your Calgary property. Ponds and Waterfalls seem to be the latest trend, especially with the good economic times of the last few years in Calgary.

Well fellow Calgary people, that is a good thing, a pond or a waterfall addition to your backyard can add immensely to your property value.

There are a few things a person in Calgary would want to consider before installing a pond or a waterfall.

The first thing you should think about is your what you want. Personality and lifestyle are two important things. Do you have kids? Pets? This can be important in determining if a pond less waterfall or a pond is right for you in Calgary

Next issue is maintenance. There are not a lot of maintenance companies in Calgary, so you will most likely be maintaining your pond or waterfall yourself. I am a pond builder in the Calgary area, we build low maintenance ponds and waterfalls, not no maintenance.

In regards to ponds, they require cleaning once a year. Larger ponds have a bigger ecosystem, so there is a point in which a pond becomes self sustainable. A good pond clean out typically takes a couple of hours.

With a pond clean out in Calgary, you want to pump out your old water and clean out the rocks and gravel in your pond with a pressure washer.

With the right addition of natural microbes throughout the Calgary pond season, you should have a few minor algae blooms and not have too much of a problem with string algae.

In the winter, most people in Calgary leave their fish in their pond and get a small heater to keep a hole in the ice. It isn’t the cold Calgary winters (even though we are blessed with chinooks) that kill fish, it is the trapped gases underneath the ice. (especially in a small pond)

Pondless waterfalls are left on in the winter time as many folks love the look of a beautifully iced up waterfall. Caution, your pumps can ice up if it gets too cold.

Other than that, the only thing you have to do as a Waterfalls Calgary owner is take the pump out of the waterfall chamber, usually in mid October, put it in a bucket of water, and store in a frost free location for that the winter.

Also, one must think about operating costs. A typical Aquascapes pump will cost in the neighborhood of $30 – $50 per month to run. This isn’t too bad, but it can add up. Not everyone in Calgary is rich.

Lastly, no pond or waterfall in Calgary is complete without plants. You must ask, what colors will work best for my waterfall? When do you want blooms? Are you going to try and overwinter your plants? Or are you going to bring them in for the winter?

Well, these are just a few important things to look at when deciding on purchasing a pond or waterfall, but they are all important.
