PixEvo – retro-styled game where you gather pixels
July 29th, 2010 | by admin |Hello people!
PixEvo is a retro-styled platformer game where you explore the game world and collect pixels to evolve into better forms with more abilities to reach new places and collect all the pixels and save the world, ATARI-STYLE! haha
Its a small project I wanted to make and Im glad its finally out, it has 8-bit music that I made as well so I hope you enjoy it
WARNING MAC USERS: Ive had reports of inputs not working on Firefox 2 on the mac, if that happens try more recent browsers or safari.
I liked the idea. Getting started from a bunch of pixels and then evolve to something better. However, I don’t like the game challenge: the player has to be too precise to jump from a plataform to another. Simple actions, such as jumping, running, walking, pushing levers, should not be the real challenge of the game (this is valid for any game, from my point of view). When you set the game difficulty based on these trivial actions, the player gets easily bored and/or frustrated. I recommend the book – ROLLINGS, Andrew; MORRIS, Dave. Game architecture and design. It presents a very good overview of developing games, but in the conceptual aspect, not the technical aspect. It teaches how to develop a storyline, the characters, scenario, difficulty, and how to make all this match with each other. Moreover, the game must be played at once, as it doesn’t save any progress. Good game, but I wouldn’t play it for too long
